German, the third most studied language in Europe, is the official language of Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Liechtenstein, Belgium and Luxembourg. Globally the number of German speakers is about 110 million. Many different German dialects exist region by region. For example, the German you can hear while walking along the streets of Zurich, a German canton of Switzerland, is different from that spoken in Dresden in Germany. Dialects have different pronunciations and even spellings of certain words.
Hochdeutsch, the standardised variety of the German language, originated back in the 16th century when Martin Luther, a German monk and the most important figure of the Protestant Reformation, unified all the dialects and created this new variety of the language for the population. He translated the Bible from Hebrew and ancient Greek into German, using expressions comprehensible even for illiterate people. From this moment on, this version of the language became the official one.
