Many would agree that Hungarian is one of the most difficult languages to learn. This is because of its origin: it is a Uralic language of the Finno-Ugric branch and this makes it very different from Indo-European ones, which have nearly the same structures. In addition to this unique origin, Hungarian also embraced the influences of Iranian and Turkic languages. However, since Hungarian tribes arrived in and settled in the Carpathian Basin, many changes occurred in the language, primarily thanks to the effect of Slavic and German. Later in the 17th century also Italian and French loan words appeared. Nowadays Hungarian has about 13 million native speakers globally. It is spoken in Hungary but also in Transylvania, Slovakia, Serbia, Croatia, Austria, Poland, Slovenia, Ukraine and the USA.
Hungary has been part of the Visegrád Group (named after the Hungarian town of Visegrád just north of the country’s capital, Budapest), along with the Czech Republic, Poland and Slovakia. They formed this union to work together in some fields of common interest. The countries became members of the European Union in 2004, making Hungarian one of the EU’s official languages.
