Covering one-ninth of the Earth’s total landmass, Russia is the largest country in the world. Its population is about 150 million people, who speak Russian, an Indo-European language from the Balto-Slavic group. As everyone knows, the Russian language uses its own alphabet, the Cyrillic one, which has its roots back in 9th-century Bulgaria. Two Byzantine brothers, Saints Cyril and Methodius, created a new alphabet called the Glagolitic script, adding several letters to those found in the Greek alphabet, to help with translating Greek religious texts to Slavic. This subsequently served as the basis of the scripts today referred to as Cyrillic and named in honour of Saint Cyril.
Russian shows the effects of other languages, such as Church Slavonic, the language of the Russian Orthodox Church. Other influences come from Greek, Latin, Polish, German, French, Italian and English. Russian is the eighth most spoken language in the world and the fifth most studied in Europe. It is the official language of Russia, Belarus, Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan but it is also common in some neighbouring countries, such as Lithuania, Estonia, Latvia, Moldova, Ukraine, Armenia and Uzbekistan.
Russia has an important role as a global power. It is one of the major suppliers of energy products, as well as a relevant market space for goods and services of the European Union.
