As with many other Indo-European languages, Romanian comes from Vulgar Latin and is part of the Balkan Romance group of languages. However, it is the only Romance language still spoken in Eastern Europe. There are two countries with Romanian as their official language: Romania and Moldova. Other territories have Romanian minorities, including Hungary, Ukraine and Serbia.
As regards the origins of the language, the era of Roman invasions introduced Vulgar Latin to the dialects of the Dacians. The arrival of Slavs in the 9th century brought further influences on the language, changing and adapting the vocabulary and pronunciations. Modern Romanian is still adding foreign words, for example from English, French, Italian, Portuguese and Spanish, all languages coming from the same family.
About 30 million people speak Romanian as their mother tongue or second language. It is one of the official languages of the European Union, which Romania joined in 2007. The country is a member of NATO, too. As to culture, seven groups of monuments and sites of Romania belong to the UNESCO World Heritage.
